Change yourself. Change your world. Volunteer.

How can I help?

When disaster strikes, that's the first question so many of us ask.

Here's what to do first:

Step 1: Check your own household; check your neighbors. Is everyone safe and well?

Step 2: Let family and friends know that you are alright. If you can, leave phone lines as free as possible. Use email, texting, or social media to communicate.

Step 3: Check our website for volunteer roles you can fill. Or email us. We'll be on the job!

More important, before a disaster strikes, consider training with a response agency. You'll become a skilled volunteer fully prepared for our next local emergency. Here are some key options:
  • The San Diego County Fire Authority needs volunteer and reservist firefighters, and provides an outstanding training opportunity.
  • Volunteer with San Diego County Sheriff's Office as a member of their Search and Rescue Team.
  • If you are a medical or public health professional, join the Medical Reserve Corps (MRC) Program of San Diego County's EMS to receive specialized training along with opportunities to participate in disaster exercises and drills. You may also register as a Disaster Health Care Practitioner to be called on during an incident.
  • The American Red Cross can train you to serve not only our own public but to respond nationwide in a broad range of challenging positions.
  • The Salvation Army is a major provider of emergency services to the public and offers many training opportunities.
  • Members of Community Emergency Response Teams are trained all-risks, all-hazards volunteers who protect their neighborhoods in an emergency.
  • Volunteer San Diego's own innovative program matches valuable volunteer resources with disaster response organizations that need them. Join our Cadre members in training and planning year round!
