  Wildfires 2007: Youth-Friendly Volunteer Opportunities

Volunteer San Diego has always been committed to helping students find meaningful ways to volunteer in their communities.  So we’ve started a list of family and youth-friendly disaster response opportunities.  Take a look below and see how you can help.

Remember that often during disasters, everyday volunteer needs are ignored.  Please check our project calendar and consider signing up for one of the many ongoing FLEX projects ideal for youth.

Have a great wildfire or disaster preparedness project idea perfect for youth volunteers?  We will be updating this list regularly. Send us your ideas

Wildfire-Related Volunteer Opportunities for Youth

Disaster Preparedness Service-Learning Project
AGE: Fourth, fifth and sixth grades, though curriculum can be adapted to other standards
Project Description: Students engage as active participants of school safety teams while reinforcing classroom science.
●Pre-service activities focus on learning about disasters and how communities respond.
●Service activities engage students in making recommendations to their school safety council to update the school’s safety procedure. Their voice will not only assist the school in assessing their safety procedures but will help them see the need for all home, school and communities to be prepared for emergency situations.
●Post-service activities will focus again on classroom study, but will encourage students to create a common list of disaster preparation needs and reflect on what they have learned.
Special Thanks:  This curriculum was developed by Volunteer Center Orange County in partnership with the Orange County Department of Education, the Costa Mesa Fire Department and the American Red Cross.

Check the following links for some other great youth service projects related to disaster preparation and response:

The San Diego Wildfires Education Project - The purpose of this education project is to assist students, grades K-8, and their teachers in understanding, appreciating, and participating in the environmental recovery process following the San Diego wildfires.

Masters of Disaster - The award-winning disaster preparedness curriculum teaches children how to prevent, prepare for, and respond to disasters and other emergencies.  Lessons are tied to contents standards in math, language arts, the natural sciences and social sciences.   Available in customized formats suitable for grades k-8.

Other ideas to inspire your service:
These ideas come from volunteers, staff and other creative thinkers around the county.  Feel free to share you ideas and we will add them to this list as they roll in.

1.  Students baby-sit for FREE for your parents and neighbors so they can attend important meeting related to post-fire recovery.

2.  Organize a drive for "your own" - for example, Girl Scouts can collect badges for scouts who lost their homes.

3.  Visit the San Diego Wildfires Education Project (website above) to learn about native species that need fire to germinate and create your own native plant nursery.

A note regarding clothing, toy and food drives... at the moment, most agencies are overwhelmed with in-kind donations.  If you are a student or teacher organizing a drive, please consider one of the other projects listed on this page.  At the very least, we ask you to call around and confirm with an agency willing to accept your donations should you proceed with a drive.

Finally, please remember to check out our general wildfire volunteer page as well as our regular youth volunteer pages at the links below...
