Change yourself. Change your world. Volunteer.

In a disaster, your help will be needed...

Volunteers will be called upon to staff hotlines, assess damage, sort donated food, prepare meals, comfort survivors, and much more. Volunteer San Diego will connect people who want to help to the places where help is most needed.

In the first few hours and days after a disaster strikes, first responders and lead disaster response agencies (e.g., the American Red Cross, The Salvation Army) are often overwhelmed by the thousands of citizens desiring to volunteer their assistance. It takes time to get all of their trained volunteers in position to perform their preplanned activities. While additional volunteers will be in high demand as the disaster unfolds, many disaster agencies cannot handle the thousands of phone calls and emails they initially receive.

This is where Volunteer San Diego serves a crucial function. When a disaster strikes, we mobilize San Diegans immediately by posting on our website volunteer opportunities which government agencies and other organizations active in disasters have asked us to help them fill. Volunteers may also call us to be directed to where they are most needed. We update these service opportunities daily or as new needs arise.

Volunteer San Diego's disaster program is made possible through generous contributions from Qualcomm, Inc. and The San Diego Foundation.
