Engaging Students in Service: An Introduction to Service-Learning

Agency: Volunteer San Diego

Description: Click here to register for this course. Please complete registration form and return to Volunteer San Diego by February 17, 2009.

February 19, 2009 4:00 – 7:00 pm (Registration begins at 3:45 pm)
(4699 Murphy Canyon Road San Diego, CA 92123 – United Way Building)

An Introduction to Service-Learning is for anyone working with students or youth groups -- in the classroom or after school -- this training will teach you the essentials of integrating community service with academic learning…all in three easy steps.

• First, what is service-learning? How is it different from community service? We will begin by exploring the three types of service and the elements of service-learning projects.

• Next we will demonstrate how to do service-learning. Learn 4 simple steps and practice some easy-to-use tools for planning service projects with your students. Experience sample lessons to get your students thinking. We'll even give you time to begin brainstorming project ideas with your peers.

• And finally, resources: We will review the various curricula, resources and support available to you through Volunteer San Diego and beyond.

The Engaging Students in Service Trainings are designed to be practical and highly interactive (including modeling lesson plans, group brainstorming sessions, and free curricula). Our intention is that you leave us with the tools necessary for service-learning success.

Recommended Pre-training Materials: There is a 15-minute online reading assignment which you should review before the training. The training activities will springboard from these concepts, so it is important that you review them. They can be found at http://volunteersandiego.org/AboutUs/index.php/youth_families/sl101_pretraining.html

There is a $30** registration fee for the training. Trainings are appropriate for all educators: teachers, afterschool staff, administrators, principals and parents.

Checks should be made payable to Volunteer San Diego. If you decide not to attend, reimbursements will be granted no later than February 17, 2009. After that, fees become nonrefundable due to copying and other administrative costs incurred.

Trainings are subject to cancellation if there are less than 10 participants registered February 17, 2009.
