Description: As a result of the increased awareness of the obesity crisis and violence in our neighborhood, the Linda Vista Collaborative has embarked on a project that will increase the opportunities for structured physical activity of youth in this area. Building on the belief that sports have a powerful appeal both to attract and to involve youth and their families, the Collaborative is in the process of forming a soccer club in Linda Vista. As a kickoff, to get youth and their families involved in this effort, the Collaborative will organize a Soccer Tournament, the Linda Vista Cup, on October 3-4, 2009. The target age group is youth 12-14. Volunteers will be taking care of most of the logistics involved during the two-day tournament (e.g., player registration, field marshals, referees, BBQ, water stations, photographers, cleaning, recycling, etc.)
Connection to Poverty in San Diego County: Linda Vista is one of San Diego's most diverse and under-served neighborhoods. Due to budget cuts, our local public schools offer very few opportunities for team sports activities. The vast majority of the children attending local schools are minorities and come from low-income backgrounds. Children living in poverty in Linda Vista have considerably fewer opportunities for healthy and fun extra-curricular activities than their peers in more affluent communities.
