| Creating Smiles that Will go Miles for Refugees |
Agency: Jewish Family Service of San Diego
Description:
October 3rd from 9:30 AM to 1:30 PM, 1:00 PM to 5:00 PM Location: Metro – San Diego, 92114 Description: In the past year, Jewish Family Service (JFS) has resettled more than 240 refugees in San Diego. The Refugee Family Strengthening Program aims to further the integration and self-sufficiency of refugee families by providing interactive seminars on communication and money management skills, healthy parenting, gender relations and more. Community integration is an essential determinant to successful refugee resettlement so by demonstrating San Diego's local support the integration process becomes easier. Therefore, we are looking for warm, friendly and culturally sensitive individuals to support our graduating families in this one day event. Volunteer tasks will include basic supervision of children, leading organized activities such as various park/beach games (ie. volleyball, balloon toss, scavenger hunt, jump rope, and Frisbee), face-painting barbecuing, and setting up, facilitating and breaking down stations. Despite having resettled in San Diego, this will be the first time for many of the refugee children to see the ocean. So come on out to support San Diego's newest residents and have some fun in the sun! Volunteers at this event will support 25-30 Iraqi refugee families' graduation by demonstrating support and facilitating community activities. Connection to Poverty in San Diego County: All the attending families receiving recognition are low-income refugees. Minimum Age: 7 with an adult; 16 without an adult Volunteers Needed: 15 Supplies Needed: Volunteers may bring a swimsuit if they'd like to swim and may also bring blankets/towels to lay on. Any spare coolers or portable barbecues and barbecue equipment to use would be greatly appreciated. Volunteers may also bring arts and craft supplies to share or donate.
