Connection to Poverty in San Diego County: A free community resource, public libraries have a profound impact on poverty. Literacy and poverty are inextricably linked; studies have proven low literacy rates correlate to lower academic achievement, fewer job skills and less opportunities for personal advancement. Less skilled readers are also less likely to vote or engage in social and civic activities. In addition to access to information and literacy programs, San Diego public libraries offer training in life skills, parenting and nutrition, as well as free tools for job searching. In the current economy, libraries nationwide have seen a surge in use of online job searching resources.
