Community Disaster Education Outreach

Agency: American Red Cross

Description:

The Outreach Team consists of volunteers who present thirty-minute presentations on disaster preparedness to community groups, schools, and businesses. We are looking for volunteers that have public speaking experience and are very comfortable presenting to groups. The outreach team also participates in festivals, parades, and health fairs. We staff tables with disaster preparedness information and talk to the public about ways they may prepare for disasters by creating an emergency plan; building a kit; and receiving CPR and first aid training.

Purpose: To provide disaster education and disaster preparedness information to companies, organizations, clubs and schools

Key Responsibilities:

  • Conduct and manage presentations in a professional environment
  • Host booths at events, businesses and organizations and provide information about personal preparedness to the public
  • Equip students and participants with vital knowledge of disasters and how to prepare and react to them
  • Answer questions regarding the American Red Cross-San Diego/Imperial Counties Chapter

Qualifications:

  • Interest in people and the ability to work well with volunteers and paid staff
  • Thorough knowledge of the Mission, Fundamental Principles, history and services of the American Red Cross
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • Basic computer skills
  • Ability to provide quality customer service
  • Knowledge of general office protocol, procedures and equipment
  • Professional appearance and manner
  • Bi-lingual Spanish/English as plus

Training/Criteria:

  • Attend a Red Cross Orientation
  • Complete an Application
  • Complete an Interview
  • Complete Background Check
  • Attend an Outreach Open House
  • Attend a Community Disaster Education Course
  • Training as per Position
